Traditional insulation materials such as rockwool and fiberglass can pose serious health risks if not handled properly or without the proper protective gear. Additionally, they are harmful to the environment and are less effective at insulating your home's cavity walls.

The more you discover about these materials, the more you may question why they are still in use. With Green Home Improvements, you don’t have to worry. We offer safe, sustainable alternatives that help create a better world for everyone.

Advantages Of Installing Loft Insulation For Homeowners

Loft insulation benefits the entire home, not just the loft area. Our sustainable materials help minimize condensation and humidity in the loft while also reflecting heat away from the home's interior, which can cut energy bills by up to 50% during the summer.

This is due to the reduced need for appliances to combat heat. In winter, the insulation works by trapping heat inside, preventing it from escaping and reflecting it back into the home's interior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to add too much loft insulation in your home's attic? Yes, it is possible to put too much loft insulation in your attic. While insulation helps retain heat and improve energy efficiency, excessive insulation can cause problems such as: Poor ventilation: Too much insulation can block air circulation in the attic, leading to moisture buildup, which could result in mold growth or damage to your roof. Increased weight: Excessive insulation can add unnecessary weight to the ceiling, which may not be structurally ideal for some homes. Wasted energy: Over-insulating can lead to diminishing returns in terms of energy savings, as the insulation will only provide a certain level of benefit beyond which there is little additional advantage. It's important to ensure that the insulation is installed to the recommended depth and that there is proper ventilation to allow for air flow and moisture control. A professional can help you determine the optimal amount of insulation for your home.

What is the best material for insulating a loft? The ideal material for loft insulation depends on your goals for the space and the level of heat retention you're aiming for during the summer. For most homes, we recommend Eco SupaSoft insulation, which is made from 95% recycled plastic, or one of our reflective thermal cavity wall insulation options that reflects heat back to its source. Two popular choices are Celotex, thermal boards, and TLX thermal sheeting. During the winter, Eco SupaSoft stored in your cavity wall helps enhance heating efficiency while reducing energy consumption.

Can You Put New Cavity Wall Insulation Over Old? Yes, you can put new insulation over old insulation, but a few caveats might make you rethink the possibility of re-using old material. First, if the material is worn out and broken down – or squished, in the case of Rockwool and similar materials – it will not give you as much thermal insulation power as the new material. In this case, replacing all the insulation is better. It will allow you to enjoy a home with better cavity wall insulation overall. If your insulation shows signs of water damage or is damp, you will need to remove all wet material and fix the underlying issue causing the moisture to collect. Failure to do so can lead to further cavity wall damage, leading to respiratory troubles as mould and mildew grow in the insulation.
